Born Shannon Morris in Colorado, he converted to Islam in his twenties and became involved in social activism and media, working with organizations like the Islamic Assembly of North America. After spending seven years in a UAE prison on a manslaughter charge that was overturned on appeal, he was released in 2013 and now produces content from Malaysia, focusing on what he terms the economic, political, and psychological decolonization of the Muslim world.
